Teeth for Life

Our team at Castle Dental Practice firmly believe that our teeth should not cause us pain and should last us our lifetime. We are here to help you achieve this by keeping oral disease at bay so you can enjoy good dental health and a radiant smile. We offer the following hygienist services:

SCALE AND POLISH

Good dental hygiene and gum health is the foundation of all healthy mouths. Without this, any dental work you have done is more likely to fail. Even with your best efforts, there will still be areas of your mouth that you will not be able to clean as effectively as a professional scale and polish.

Regular professional cleaning combined with coaching to improve your oral hygiene will ensure huge dental benefits. Research shows that good cleaning significantly reduces the risk of gum disease, replacement fillings, new cavities and gum recession. By following this advice, you can avoid the need for more invasive and expensive dental treatment.

SCALE AND POLISH WITH AIRFLOW ®

AIRFLOW® and GUIDED BIOFILM THERAPY is a revolutionary form of dental maintenance and prevention. Firstly, a dye will be placed onto your teeth which shows up where the plaque is; plaque being the main cause of tooth decay and gum disease. This is a great educational tool to show you areas that you may be missing, and our hygienist will give you some helpful tips and tricks on how to easily reach those areas.

Your hygienist then uses a controlled stream of air, water and a fine powder onto the tooth surface. The powder acts as an antimicrobial agent to both reduce and slow down the regrowth of plaque in your mouth, leaving your mouth feeling fresh, clean and plaque free.

This minimally invasive technology is non-abrasive and completely safe to use on all oral surfaces & difficult to reach places such as enamel, dentine, soft tissues, restorations, orthodontic appliances & implants.

It also works incredibly well at removing those stubborn discolorations and stains from your teeth. Most patients do not require their teeth to be polished following the use of this system, and most report their teeth feeling smoother and remaining smoother for longer.

PERIODONTAL TREATMENT

It is estimated that 90% of adults in the UK have some form of gum disease, which is the leading cause of tooth loss for adults in the UK. A healthy smile is essential for good well-being, and we do all we can to ensure that you are happy and healthy.

There are two types of gum disease:

Gingivitis

Periodontitis

Gingivitis is the inflammation of the gums, which is caused by a build-up of plaque, a naturally and continuously occurring film of bacteria in the mouth. When plaque it is not effectively removed everyday it will irritate the gums leading them to become sore and inflamed.

Signs and symptoms of gingivitis include:

Bleeding gums
healthy gums DO NOT bleed

Pain and tenderness
-

Bad breath or bad taste

Red or shiny gums

Gingivitis can be completely reversed with the correct treatment and maintenance. Left untreated it can progress into a more serious form of gum disease called periodontitis.

Up to 30% of adults in the UK who have gingivitis can develop a more severe form of gum disease called periodontitis. This is a destructive form of gum disease where irreversible damage happens to the gum and bone that anchor our teeth.

Initially you may experience discomfort such as sensitivity to hot and cold, or pain when chewing. Then your teeth may start tilting and drifting, creating gaps. The darker roots of your teeth become visible.

All of this will eventually cause you to lose confidence in your smile. It is also common to develop a bad taste and smell in your mouth. Eventually you may develop an infection and be in pain a lot of the time. Ultimately the affected teeth may need to be extracted, and dentures are usually advised until the disease is under control.

Periodontitis is linked to the development of several other diseases, such as heart disease, diabetes and Alzheimer’s disease. Good oral hygiene combined with professional cleaning can keep periodontal disease under control – for a better oral and systemic health.

At Castle Dental Practice we take periodontal disease very seriously. Every patient is treated as an individual and your appointment will be tailored to your needs and concerns. Our primary focus is to provide you with the skills and knowledge on how best to care for your mouth, motivating you to keep excellent levels of oral hygiene, helping you keep your teeth for longer.
